I’m nearing the end of a Molli nap, probably (she’s been down about 1.5 hours and could wake up any moment), but I’ve got most everything else under control and thought I’d give a quick Molli update.
First, she got weighed again on Tuesday or Wednesday and had gained a pound (0.4k) in the preceding two weeks, so we’re not worried about that anymore.
Second, she had her first amazing night of sleep ever a few nights ago… went down at a reasonable bedtime and stayed down until morning, with just a couple of minor wakeups in the middle of the night when her sut (pacifier) fell out of her mouth. She hasn’t repeated the behavior (and actually put us through hell by crying for ninety minutes very early this morning), but we’re optimistic that it’s a harbinger of things to come.
Third, she’s still not crawling but does seem to be creeping more and more.
Fourth, I tried giving her some Cheerios the other day and the experiment was a complete failure. Auntie Deb had told me, “If she’s old enough to pick them up and put them in her mouth, she’s old enough to eat them.” So I laid a scattering of them down on her playmat with her. She scooped them up, looked at them, threw them around, and so on. Didn’t seem to have any interest in putting them in her mouth. I left the room for a moment, came back, and she was looking up at me with a curious expression and going, “Gak… gak… gak!” Little coughy sounds. Nowhere near choking, but clearly something in her throat was bothering her. Wasn’t hard to put two and two together on that one: I picked her up and “burped” her a little, and after a moment she stuck out her tongue with a half-chunk of a semi-dissolved cheerio on it. I grabbed that away and gave her some water to wash down whatever little bits were still stuck in her mouth and throat. We’ll give her another week or two before we try again.
It’s going to be a busy weekend. I’ll be taking her to Assistens Kirkegaard (“Assistens Churchyard”) this afternoon as part of the Friday beer stroll, then tomorrow we’re having some friends from up north down for dinner (they have two kids, about three- and one-year-old), then Sunday is Fastelavn, or Shrovetide, meaning we get to dress Molli up in her costume to watch older kids “beat the cat out of the barrel” (I’ll explain later), and next thing you know it’s the Pats and Eagles in the middle of the night. Not sure how we’re going to handle that yet.
Moster Mette is back on her way to the states shortly and we had a goodbye dinner for her last night, at which we were joined by Mormor, Jorgen, and Michael. Unfortunately daddy shutterbug wasn’t around (Danish class), so there are no pictures at all from the evening of Molli’s seven month birthday.
Seven months. Astonishing.
It’s just two weeks until we board a plane ourselves, and we’re all looking forward to it.
I should also mention that I’ve been very bad about email as well as this blog lately, as well as all my other internet presences, because we’ve been very busy, and it doesn’t look likely to relent until we’re back from the states. Sorry I haven’t written more, and please forgive me for trying to kill many birds with one stone by blogging here instead of sending out a bunch of individualized little notes.
One of the plus sides about all this busy-ness is that part of it’s arising from the possibility of my doing more work for IO/Eidos, which is going to mean more money (though probably not much). It’s also going to help me lobby for a full-time position rather than this contract basis I’ve been working on. The down side is that the novel, which only needs two weeks of solid work to have in great form, is gathering virtual dust on the hard-drive.
That’s all for now, but hopefully I’ll be able to post some pictures over the weekend. And what timing… Thar she blows, full wail to starboard!
Doesn’t sound like a choking just something she was not familiar with in her throat. You are right to give it a little time and try again. Hannah ate them right off one at a time in a very lady like fashion whereas Sophie played and threw them around mostly. At least that is what I remember. I will feed her some myself in two weeks.
Ooooops! Does this mean I’m to blame for Molli’s first choking experience??? I was told, and I think I told you, that Cheerios makes a good first “solid” because they have a whole in the middle and thus are “unchokable”. Molli proves me wrong again. Won’t be the last time I’m sure.
Glad you all survived the episode.
