Sitting, Wearing a Hat

The title (“Sitting, Wearing a Hat”) is actually from Stephen Sondheim’s “The Ladies Who Lunch,” a song that’s much too dark and bitter to be appropriate to Molli. And yet that little snatch of song jumped into my head when I looked through these pictures from yesterday. I’ve looked up the lyrics online and realized the line is actually “Sitting, choosing a hat. (Does anyone still wear a hat?) I’ll drink to that.” And so on. I don’t care. “Sitting, wearing a hat,” is exactly what Molli is doing. Or more accurately, “Attempting to sit, wearing a hat, and falling over.”

The main thing is, Trine put Molli in a hat at one point yesterday, and she seemed to like it.

We’ve also been trying to help her learn to sit up. She’s been making good progress, but yesterday was a landmark. Here she is resting up between attempts at unsupported sitting.

She’s able to sit upright unassisted for about two seconds at a time. Then she either falls back, crunches forward, or capsizes. Sometimes she kind of wobbles between these possibilities—it wouldn’t be a bad casino game, laying down your money on where you think she’ll end up.

Here’s an example of the forward crunch conclusion:

The next picture is now among my favorites, but it’s the one that follows it that makes me laugh. The pictures were taken one right after the other.

…Who’s got their money on capsize right? Who’s got capsize left? No more bets, the baby is leaning…

Winner, Capsize Left!

I took about thirty pictures of the whole episode and don’t have the heart to delete any of them.

I should also mention that Molli’s eating more and more cereal, and last night threw a fit at the end of her cup of porridge until Trine made more porridge for her.

Now I have to get back to resuming regular life.

  1. Love the pictures! Boy she is looking more and more grown up now that she is semi vertical. You can really see that she is going to be a tall girl. She looks very tall for her age already.
Boy, I can’t wait to see her!
