I’m late getting my monthly post together — I’m hoping to do it this weekend — but wanted to note this anecdote for the permanent record.
While we were eating dinner last night, Trine announced that she’d read there was going to be a Science Camp this summer. We talked a little about what kind of science the camp was about (mostly the natural sciences), and helped Maddie understand the difference between the different disciplines. Trine then asked Molli if she were interested.
Molli looked as if she’d just been offered a simmering a plate of dog vomit.
“But I am, I am!” Maddie cried out gleefully. Her eyes were shining, her cheeks flushed with excitement. She was wriggling in her seat.
“Oh, sweetie,” Trine said consolingly, “it’s only for kids entering seventh to ninth grades in the fall.”
Maddie immediately burst into tears and began howling about the unfairness of the world.
“Little kids can like science, too!” she roared.
She fled the table, a wailing hot mess.
It took twenty minutes to calm her down.
And, uh, we’re looking for science camps…
Maybe I can bring Maddie to work with me one day when you guys are over here! And Molli, if it's not too dog vomit-y for her. Anyway, yay science!
