Paternity Leave: Week 1

Actually, despite the title I’ve been on paternity leave about 10 days now, but what the hell. I like the optimism of pretending I’ll manage to get a blog post out every week.

We can start with a note on the weather: it’s been fantastic.

Those are just random pics of Maddie reclining in the back yard. It’s part of my new strategy: spew the photos and minimize the chat.

That much said, here are some shots Trine got of her and Molli Malou’s St. Hans Evening (Midsummer’s Eve) at Furesø Yacht Club. (No, we haven’t joined yet, but we’re going to.) The original plan was for the whole family to drive down to Frederiksberg for the Frederiksberg Garden celebration we’ve attended all but one of the last six years, but… well, we’re trying to minimize the chat, and a flat tire on a backup stroller just isn’t that interesting.

Uncharacteristically for Denmark, the weather has been so dry and warm and lovely we’ve actually had to water the garden. We’ve found a way to parlay that into entertainment.

Trine’s been gathering up elderberry blossoms from around the lake and brewing her own… well, we have no English for it, but it’s basically Elderberry Concentrate (Hyldeblomst saft).

Now and then we barbecue some ribs.

The next two shots are just because I am so damn proud. Before and after.

For some reason Irfanview flipped a few pictures again. Sideways can be cool, so never mind.

Okay, now we’re up to this past Sunday. Time to head into Tivoli.

We’d never seen it so empty.

It was fantastic. Molli Malou was able to run amok on all the rides with no lines. She even did the Odin Express, which is a real rollercoaster even her mother gets a little nervous on.

And for the first time, Maddie didn’t shut down on contact with Tivoli.

Back to the less chat strategy… these Tivoli pics pretty much speak for themselves. Just keep in mind they’re all in chronological order…

Plenty of video to throw at you in the next couple of days, including (I’m told) Maddie’s first swing ride. We’re very, very busy using my leave time to make a billion fixes to the house and simultaneously prepare for Molli Malou’s fifth birthday. (Five! How did that happen?)

Maddie is doing great, Molli Malou is doing great, and surely as soon as I click “publish” I’m going to think of a thousand things I should have mentioned… how close Maddie is to making a back-to-stomach roll, how wicked Molli Malou’s sense of humor is getting… but those are the things I can remember. I obviously won’t remember the things I can’t remember yet until after I click that publish button. So here we go…

  1. Thanks for all the photos. I donot mind more photos and less words although I do enjoy the commentary. Clearly both are growing into lovely little girs, although Molli Malou is not so little anymore.
